Alright, gonna go all naive, pie-in-the-sky here and make a request that is in all likelihood totally unrealistic.

Can we all try to shut the hell up about politics around here? Yes, I know, Oppo is an off-topic forum and there are no rules about political discussions, but the primary focus is pretty heavily cars/trucks/motorcycles/anything with an engine. I come here because I like those things and I like the dynamics this place has. I come here because it’s filled with people I like who have interesting things to share.

I don’t give a crap if you’re in love with Trump or want to Feel The Bern until your hair turns white. I just really don’t want to hear about it.

Anyone with me here? Bueller?

It’s only February folks. We still have 8.5 more months of this bullshit. Can we try to leave politics at the door and just enjoy each other’s company and our common interests?

Short answer: No.

Long answer: People who wanna talk politics are gonna do that around politicking season (which happens to be right now), and they’re gonna do that everywhere people are, not just on oppo. The only real place you can escape that is to be somewhere where people aren’t.

The beautiful thing about kinja, as terrible as it is usually, is that if you don’t want to see and read someone’s post, you really don’t have to. Clicking, reading, and clicking again to comment are all optional. I wish political discussions in real life were that easy to avoid/control.

I think a fairer request though would be to follow the board rules stating that political content has to be tagged and that the first paragraph shouldn’t appear on the FP. More beyond that though takes oppo away from the low-level management hands off moderation style, and brings it closer to the stricter moderating standards of TAY, and that is not the right direction to go in.

Totally with you on this. I get the idea that controlling content comes with its own problems/drawbacks, but I feel like we can make an exception for politics. That is the one topic that I can’t stand to hear about. I will walk away from people at work when they start with that noise.

Laughing at the tag, and I appreciate the sentiment. On Facebook, people who preach anything (politics, religion, food, exercise, etc.) get “hidden” and we don’t have that option here. I respect the dislike of censorship though, so how about a request to limit the politics to a post or two a day? Sort of how the mods requested we stop flooding the forum with multiple posts on any one topic? That seems fair to me.

Look, I’m with you. Even though I’ve been posting more on oppo’s political posts than the car posts, I try not to start political posts myself. I may have an interest in politics, but politics is just one of those topics that leads to shit-posting, strawman accusations, cognitive dissonance, and just flat out stupidity of the worst kind, especially on a place like this. I’ll admit to being guilty of these crimes sometimes, but I generally don’t start it up myself and, unlike some people on Oppo, intentionally get involved in other’s discussions just to soapbox for the billionth time. But, this being an open forum, that’ll happen, and that’s when the rulebook gets thrown out the window and everyone is mad at everyone else. That’s the nature of the beast, and it may be hard to avoid, but you just got to learn to accept it and keep your head down, ignore it, and move on. Again, I’m not the best at this, but FWIW, I try to remain as civil as possible, despite the nature of some of my comments.
